Kevin Harlan's Best Call Has Yet to Come

This is Kevin Harlan’s season, and it’s our season, too.

Harlan is one of the voices you’ll hear if you’re a college basketball fan, calling men’s March Madness games. He’s been on the calls for the NBA and the NFL, including the Super Bowl. His voice, delivery and humor place him among greats in the business. Harlan can even make a cat running across a football field sound exciting.

At his age—he’s in his early 60s—you would think he’d be satisfied with where he is in sports broadcasting, and feel like he could rest on his laurels. And you would be wrong.

In an interview with podcast hosts Suzy Shuster and Amy Trask, Harlan said that his best call had yet to come.

Decades of work, thousands of games called and thousands of miles traveled, and he still feels like he has the runway to make that next call magical.

To be at the place in life where you haven’t closed the book on it, and possibility still exists, is a powerful motivator. It begs the question: can you be curious about what is possible for you, and what you are capable of being?

Of course you can. Bravery can be dialed up alongside that curiousity, which can produce its own magic.

Now, here comes the caveat. It can be very difficult to see that the best is yet to come for you when you’re in the middle of massive change and transition. So many disparate factors can be pulling and tugging at you. Taking a break and a rest is completely understandable. And when you’re ready, maybe, check in with yourself:

**Ask what is your why—What is the animating force for doing what you’re what doing.

**Community—Plug into your network, talk your friends. You never know where that support will come from.

**Unplug—Ditch the screens, get outside, and hear yourself speak to yourself.

Maybe you won’t have an iconic call of a cat crossing the goal line. But like Kevin Harlan, your best call is still on the way.
