It’s Really (Coaching) Magic
Some of the best times of my week are when I'm coaching others.
There is something amazing about being in the presence of the people I work with. The joy I get being in that space is incomparable. I spoke awhile ago about callings. I have been lucky in my life to have had two of them. And one calling has informed the other.
Journalism is about curiosity, and asking questions. It’s the same with coaching. In fact, as I was in the midst of my training, I was surprised to see a journalism basic: the 5 W’s and H (who, what, where, when, why and how) emblazoned on the course materials. At once, I was taken back to my early days, and felt right at home.
I want to bring that curiosity to my clients, in a space that feels comfortable for them, and allows them to grow. The notion of a safe space may feel trite, yet that’s what I provide. It’s a judgment-free zone, allowing them to be seen fully, which could be a rarity in their lives. When we’re seen, we become the fullest versions of ourselves, and better able to show up in every aspect of our lives.
Someone recently told me that when you’re starting out, 80% of your time is devoted to marketing. I’m in throes of that now. I’m enjoying that, even with the stumbles. But, when I sit across from someone and work with them, the magic of seeing them making their own path makes the marketing struggles worth it.

The magic is wonderful to witness. And at the end of the day, I don’t walk ahead of my clients on the path. I walk with them, and I’m grateful for being in their presence.
